FYI: Very few winning bidders in Minnesota are exempt from paying motor vehicle sales tax. The MN Dept. of Revenue website provides the following list: List of Entities and Vehicle Types Exempt from Motor Vehicle Sales Taxes
If a vehicle is being registered with a Tax Exempt organization, they must prove they are a Tax Exempt entity. (i.e. Emergency vehicle, public or private transit operations, Township, etc.) (ST3 Form is needed)
(Below examples are showing passenger fees. If the vehicle is a commercial truck, bus, etc. those fees would be used.)
To have Tax Exempt plates:
- Doc Admin Fee $125.00
- State Vehicle Fee $3.50
- Title Fee $8.25
- Transfer Fee $10.00
- Sales Tax 6.5%
- Filing Fee $21.00
- Tech $2.25
- Plates (tax exempt) $10.00
- Tabs (tax exempt) $10.00
Or
To pay no sales tax:
- Doc Admin Fee $125.00
- State Vehicle Fee $3.50
- Title Fee $8.25
- Transfer Fee $10.00
- Sales Tax 0 (not charged)
- Filing Fee $21.00
- Tech $2.25
- Plates (standard fee) $15.50
- Tabs (standard fee) varies
It is not the affiliate’s responsibility to determine the tax exempt status of winning bidders. If a winning bidder is claiming to be exempt from motor vehicle sales taxes, a properly completed and signed ST3 form must be submitted before the motor vehicle sales taxes are removed from the invoice.
The ST3 form ONLY applies to sales taxes, ALL other vehicle fees listed on the invoice must be collected.
