Weighted Vehicles - Personal use over 10,000 pounds
Deputy registrars have the ability to override the USDOT number requirement for vehicles over 10,000 pounds if the vehicle is not used commercially. Vehicles not required to have a USDOT number are:
- Farm vehicles not used for interstate commerce
- Vehicles for personal use not involved in interstate or intrastate commerce.
- Vehicles owned and used for official business by the federal government, state or a political subdivision
Class change from Prorate Class to Commercial Class:
On the vehicle search results from MNDrive, the registration will not show the most current registration expiration date, when the truck has been registered under prorate.
When completing the MNDrive draft, the fee breakdown should only show one years worth of registration fees, if the prorate registration was current.
A statement of non-use would not be needed when the fee breakdown only shows one years worth of registration fees due at title transfer.
**Use the follow disclaimer on Commercial vehicle < or = 15,000lbs:
DOT# required to register as Commercial
***Fees listed are subject to change. Fees listed are for Commercial Class. Please advise affiliate if changing class/GVW for updated fees.

- Y class vehicles can be prorated. Tabs always expire in February the following year.
- You will need to know the empty weight and the gross vehicle weight.
Example:
2004 International is bought in June 2012. Gross vehicle weight of the truck is 51,000 pounds. You will have to prorate the tabs if they expired in February 2012. You will need to find out the empty weight of the vehicle.
Empty weight stated (example) is 10,000 pounds. You will take the 10,000 pounds and multiply that by 1.25 (empty weight) equaling 12,500. You then look on the Y class annual tax table and find the 12,001-15,000 weight section. Since it’s a 2004 the tab amount will be $90.00. (You have to multiply 1.25 to the empty weight of 10,000 pounds)
Take the $90.00 and divide that by 12 (months in a year) equaling $7.50 then multiply that by 3 (the 3 is the 3 months that it has not been used March through May) that equals $22.50 you need to round it up to $23.00.
You then take the gross vehicle weight of the truck (example) 51,000 pounds at $537.00 (this is on the Y class annual tax table) divide that by 12 equaling $44.75 and multiply that by 9 (June through February) equaling $402.75 rounding that up to $403.00.
Once the two calculations are done you will add the $23.00 and the $403.00 together for a total of $426.00. $426.00 will be the tab amount for the vehicle.
These calculations need to be done for vehicles that weight 21,000 pounds and more.
If there is a lien card, the lien card must be with the title in order to sell the vehicle. The lien holder will be liste4d on the top-left hand side of the title.
